Atlanta

My Favorite Olympic Moment

I’ll never forget Kerri Strug and her one footed vault landing in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The Team Gymnastics competition was usually dominated by the Russian team. But this year the Magnificent 7 on the USA team were a threat. All they needed was a good score on the vault to clinch the Gold Medal. Dominique Moceanu fell on both of her vaults, so Kerri was our last hope. Kerri fell on her first attempt, injuring her ankle in the process. But she took her second attempt anyway, and managed to complete the vault, landing on one foot. Her score of 9.712 was enough to earn the Gold Medal for the USA team.

Here is the YouTube video of that historic moment.

Moments like those are what the Olympics are all about.

Opening Ceremony Videos

If you follow this link you will find downloadable videos from the Opening Ceremonies dating back as far as 1920.

Leave a comment if you have a favorite Opening Ceremony moment. Remember when Muhammad Ali lit the cauldron at the 1996 Opening Ceremony in Atlanta?

Or in the 1992 Barcelona Games when Paralympic archer Antonio Rebollo lit the cauldron by shooting a burning arrow towards the cauldron?

Or in the 2002 Salt Lake City Games when the USA Hockey team from 1980 lit the torch together?

I can’t wait to see what they do in Vancouver.
