Accommodation for Winter 2010 Olympics… A Status Update

If you are planning to attend the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games as a spectator, you may be wondering where to find accommodation in the Vancouver area.

In general, conventional booking engines will not accept hotel reservations more than twelve months in advance. Attempts to book a Vancouver hotel rooms on Expedia as of December 24, 2008 returned the error message “We can only accept dates that occur between 24/12/2008 and 19/11/2009. Please enter a new date.” Similar attempts using Travelocity returned much the same result.

There are, however, viable accommodation options for spectators wanting to book accommodations during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Your first option is to rent the home of a Vancouver-area resident. Not all Vancouver residents want to attend Olympic events in 2010. Many will prefer to escape (perhaps to warmer climates) during the 2010 Games.

What is a private rental likely to cost? Using a sample of about 200 listings from the website Rent 2010, local homeowners are seeking a nightly rate of about $350 (CAD) per bedroom (on average). A number of pro-active travelers have even placed Accommodation-Seeker listings of their own on Rent 2010, and on other popular websites such as Craigslist.

Your second option is to arrange for a hotel room through a reputable tour company. While conventional booking through Expedia and Travelocity are not yet possible, a handful of operators have managed to pre-arrange a limited number of rooms for their clients. A sample of hotel package rates can now be found at Rent 2010’s Hotel Info page.

As February 2010 is still more than a year away, travelers are advised to explore a range of accommodation options before making their bookings. Contact the hotel tour operators, speak to several Vancouver homeowners, and consider advertising your own needs pro-actively as an “accommodation-seeker”. Your early and thorough travel planning will greatly enhance your enjoyment of the Winter Games in 2010.

Would you rent out your house to a total stranger? Not sure packing up the whole of the house would be that easy, although I know of someone doing exactly that for a golf tournament in St.Andrews. They stayed with ‘the mother in law’ and made some cash renting, but I don’t know if it was worth it to stay with the In Laws.

I checked out the website Scott Norris mentioned,www.reservemyhome.com. It is an easy, clean and inexpensive website to list and book homes! Wow! Too cool. I’m glad we’re finally able to book homes around the work like hotels! I suggest for anyone reading this to definitely check this site out.

I checked out the site as well SOCALgirl and your right, very nice site indeed. I’m actually looking for another site to post my condo for the olympics. It says that they advertise in some unique areas, do you know these areas?

The sites that my home are under now doesn’t advertise at all, they just want your money and leave it cluttered on there site.

12 Month in advance!? This is the olympics, but still, that’s a hole year in advance. Maybe there is a payed local service to find you a hotel from now, but book it later and it still will be available?

Awesome service form this company and they go well beyond any other listing service or site that I am aware of for 2010 Olympic vacation rentals or accommodations.

Thank you guys!

Thank you for the tip with the Vancouver residents that do not want to attend the olympics. Looks like a promising alternative to me!

I think I would prefer to find accommodations through a site like Home Away or VRBO, at least you’re renting from someone who does it all the time, not just someone who’s trying to make a quick buck and take advantage of people because it’s the Olympics. Frankly I think it should be illegal for hotels to double or triple their prices just for the Olympics. Thanks for the article.

Hey CanadianBoy,

Have you tried Home Away (dotcom) or VRBO, they are very well known and I’ve used them many times in the past. However, I don’t know how much they charge or anything but it’s worth looking into. Hope this helps.

I’ve noticed some people on Craigslist already taking reservations for rooms in their homes.

wow. $350 per night could certainly add up. but if hotels are booked solid, turning to a homeowner might be the way to proceed, i guess.

That sounds a nice idea!!!

So, we go to the website and register our self there. Thats it?

I will also rent my home. Depends on how much time I rent, would add some money from my savings and would like to travel to a warmer place. :) Sounds like a plan.

The online booking sites are missing out on a lot of revenue opportunity. Surely, they would have realised their mistake at previous Olympic, World Cups and other major games venues?

Another place to post or find accommodation would be Craigslist and also UsedVancouver.com. Good luck!

Great post, I think these games will be interesting to say the least with all of the major complaints in the winter competition scene this year. Hopefully Canada gets a grip, and shows the world how the games should and can be run.

Another suggestion for finding rentals by owner up at Whistler… http://www.alluradirect.com/whistler All owners are screened, verified and have to pay a large registration fee. Booking is online and secure.

Home For the Games is still actively seeking homestay arrangements.

Our non-profit works are in an effort to energize the power of the Olympics to help solve the homeless issues in Vancouver. With 50% of the rents charged going directly to Covenant House and Streetohome Foundation.

There are so many socially-conscious people in Metro Vancouver, Whistler and Pemberton – we offer a way to engage in the good the Olympics can bring.

Modular housing will be available for nightly/weekly stays in Whistler in either Single or shared Bunk Rooms.
With the shortage of accommodation already evident this is a great solution to the problem.
Let me know if I can help any short term visitors or volunteers coming to Whistler for the Games.

I’m sure there will always be some places to rent no matter what the size of the event, its just gonna take a resourceful person to find them.

There are often little gems to be found. Rooms to rent or ‘couchsurfing’ can either be arranged well in advance or even by knocking on a door. Churches and othe rlocal organizations wil often know of people who gladly take in guests.

Our Charitable site: http://www.homeforthegames.com has over 200 reasonably priced accommodations for Olympic visitors. It’s a win-win-WIN as 2 key charities working to end homelessness in the region will have half the rent money donated to them by the hosts. It’s nice to stay with the good guys.

f you are one of these lucky ticket holders, you may be at the stage of trying to find a place to stay during this exciting event. With hotels nearly at capacity, there are some great options for lodging. Vancouver has relaxed its bylaws, allowing for homeowners to rent out their homes during the Games!!

With the winter Olympics just a couple of weeks away I was searching for a way to get ready for Olympic competition and video games seemed to be the perfect answer. Sadly the only one available is Vancouver 2010. The Official Videogame of the Winter Olympic Games. Developed by Eurocom and published by Sega, this Olympic title looks great and does a great job giving gamers the sense of speed you see in the Winter Games, however the title lacks any sort of depth and suffers from unforgiving AI, so much so that I have yet to get a gold in all events after playing for countless hours..!

TheCOach
February 12, 2010

With Canada’s opportunity to win gold on home soul for the first time ever is very important, Canadians will not need to wait until either Hockey team plays in the gold medal game in order to see that gold. Medal hopefuls in the early days such as Jennifer Heil, Manny Osborne-Paradis, Charles Hamelin, Kristina Groves and Alexandre Dilobeau to name a few will lead Canada off to a strong start and give much needed momentum to athletes competing later on in the games. Once the pressure of the first gold medal has been relieved… I expect Canada will take off and come the end of Vancouver 2010, will be atop the medal standings will Germany and the United States of America.

As the games move along, you can find out daily who to watch for and what Canadians are medal hopefuls in what events (so you aren’t stuck flipping back and forth between Canadian and American coverage trying to find out what event you should be watching and who to look out for) @ http://www.lionsdenu.com/category/sports/thecoachs-vancouver-2010-olympic-guide-to-canadian-gold/

Best of luck to all Canadians athletes… regardless of your outcome, you will all make a nation proud.

The games havent even started and theres already been one death. Vancouver needs to pick up the pace a bit and start creating the Olympic spirit! So far they are blaming the death of the Luger on bad skills. But maybe the problem is in the system instead.

Vancouver has been continually ranked as the world’s most livable city. An Olympic sized-dose of gentrification would only serve to speed up Vancouver’s transformation from a livable yet expensive city into a glitzy hotel for international capital.
